Hypo Hillary

21 03 2006

Sen. Hillary Clinton, whose husband did nothing to stop the 1994 Rwandan genocide, sent a letter to President Bush on last week urging Bush to do something about the genocide in Darfur. She included 13 ideas to take action headlining her list with meeting Nato leaders.

He already is.

The US president said last month that he expected a UN-led force, backed by NATO and probably double the current African Union (AU) deployment, to take over in Sudan’s violence-wracked region.

Maybe this “Hillary is the leader” scheme works on Bill, but not Bush. She is, in effect, telling him to do something about an issue that he is already working on. That does not qualify as leading the charge.

Part of Hillary’s letter reads:

A U.N. mission in Darfur must now be authorized with a clear and robust mandate to protect civilians; and be supplied with the troops, air- and ground-mobility, and communications network required to fully implement that mandate.

California Conservative sets it straight, “With all due respect, a U.N. mission to stop the violence is the last thing we need. That’s why I call this a publicity stunt, not serious policymaking.”

I agree. The UN is not much more than a small dog with a bit-too-big bark. And that bark is starting to sound pretty peuney.

Here’s more:

Senator Biden and others have suggested that enforcement of the flight ban would require no more than 12 to 18 fighter planes and a handful of AWACs. I urge you to work other countries to mobilize these resources, and to ensure that the Government of Sudan ceases its overhead assaults. Our continued failure on this issue is unacceptable.

The UN idea is bad enough. But now she is supporting Biden’s plan which is a borderline nightmare to think about.
