The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said insurgents were fighting on despite a three-year “crusader” war, according to a rare video of him posted on the Internet on Tuesday.

“Your mujahideen sons were able to confront the most ferocious of crusader campaigns on a Muslim state. They have stood in the face of this onslaught for three years,” Zarqawi said on the video.

The video was believed to be the first to contain a “message” from Zarqawi, U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.

“As far as we know, this is the first video,” said a senior intelligence official. “We have seen videos of him before but they were older, more like home videos like the one of him at a wedding.”

Technical and contextual analysis was under way at the CIA, the official said.
