Let’s Make an Example of the Jihad Lawyer

Lynn Stewart, the jihad lawyer, will receive her sentence today and conservatives are hoping for the max. Precedent needs to be set with her case. Her actions are directly responsible for hundreds of deaths, and potentially thousands of others.

Predictably, the NYTimes stoops to wipe her tears:

There was little sympathy for Ms. Stewart among mainstream lawyers during the trial. But more than 400 letters she submitted to Judge Koeltl about her sentence include many from law professors and criminal defense lawyers who said that her actions never caused actual harm and warned of a chilling effect on lawyers who defend terrorists if she receives a long sentence. Her lawyers cite her long service as a government-appointed lawyer for rebels, mobsters and murderers.

Jo Ann Harris, a former assistant attorney general who authorized the 1994 indictment of Mr. Abdel Rahman, wrote that the terrorism counts against Ms. Stewart were “unwarranted overkill.”

Ms. Stewart’s failing, she wrote, was that she “didn’t have a clue that the stick she was poking in the government’s eye was going to have consequences beyond her imagination.”

The author Gore Vidal wrote to ask the judge to “side with our Bill of Rights” by not imprisoning Ms. Stewart.

Ms. Stewart said that while her radical leftist views have not changed, she will continue to fight within the system. “I really think that my patriotism — if you’ll excuse the expression — and my love of this profession demand that I have to stay and fight.”

The Washinton Times cloakes her as a caring grandmother and brave survivor:

She’s already a grandmother of 14, a cancer survivor and a former civil rights lawyer who took on radical clients others considered toxic.

Lynne Stewart will soon find out if she will be forced to assume another role _ prison inmate.

Prosecutors have asked a federal judge to impose a 30-year term for what they described in court papers as Stewart’s “extremely dangerous and devious” conduct to help an Egyptian terrorist leader communicate with followers.

“To have lost my career. To be looked at askance. This loss of my personhood is immeasurable to me,” she wrote in her letter. “It is the worst sentence and it is immutable.”

That’s right. Your personhood. Don’t worry about apologizing for the deaths of hundreds or the potential danger you have placed thousands of Americans in.

Michelle Malkin:

Gag. Stewart deserves the max for conspiring to spread violent messages to Rahman’s followers–actions which resulted in the death of some 100 tourists at Egyptian resorts. Also found in her law offices: a draft fatwa from Rahman calling on jihadists to kill Americans and their children until his release is won.

Captain Ed:

Stewart wants to play the patsy. However, patsies don’t spend the lengthy time between her conviction and her sentencing appearing at numerous left-wing anti-war rallies, undermining the war effort and claiming to have been persecuted.

Patsies don’t tell crowds that they would do the same thing all over again under the same circumstances. The only saps involved in this case come from the multitudes who bought that story, and they’re about to discover how gullible they’ve been.

UPDATE: 3:00 pm EST – After begging for mercy, terrorist supporting jihad lawyer Lynne Stewart recieved a light sentence of 28 months.

Civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart was sentenced this afternoon to 28 months in prison on a terrorism charge for helping an Egyptian sheik communicate with his followers on the outside.

The 67-year-old Stewart, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, smiled as the judge announced his decision to send her to prison for less than two-and-a-half years. She had faced up to 30 years in prison.

Stewart’s defense lawyer, Elizabeth Fink told the judge just before the sentence was pronounced: “If you send her to prison, she’s going to die. It’s as simple as that.”

Stewart was convicted in 2005 of providing material support to terrorists. She had released a statement by Omar Abdel-Rahman, a blind sheik sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted in plots to blow up five New York landmarks and assassinate Egypt’s president.

Another example of the Left’s infatuation with criminals and their inability to punish those who break the law. Begging for mercy, surviving breast cancer, she’ll die . . . Even though she has already been found guilty, none of these excuses do anything to demonstrate she shouldn’t get the max. Ok, so you don’t want to sentence her to the max of 30 years. So give her 10 years.

Liberals want to crucify Foley. They should allow one of their own to go down for her wrongdoings first. Don’t expect conservatives to throw in the towel on Foley when his time comes around.
