Homosexual Attraction CAN Be Changed

The tenet that homosexuals are “born that way,” is nothing more than a political ploy to covertly bring acceptance of their lifestyle to a moral issue. Everyday, homosexuals change their lifestyle. It stands to reason that if one can change from a homosexual lifestyle to a normal one, that they are not born that way. Homosexual activists severely discount those who do change from the homosexual lifestyle as “political traitors” who must have seen it as a “lost cause.” They simply ignore the burden of inward pain and suffering that all homosexuals endure. A new study released last week by the American Association of Christian Counselors reveals two groundbreaking results that will certainly alter current counseling techniques: 1.) Change is possible and 2.) It is not harmful.

The full results were released last week in the book Ex-Gays? A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation by Stanton L. Jones and Mark A. Yarhouse. It is the world’s first longitudinal, peer-reviewed study of its kind.

At the end of the three-year study, 67 percent of participants either reported a change toward heterosexual orientation or were successfully continuing work toward that goal.

“While we’ve known all along that long-term change is possible for people with unwanted same-sex attractions, it’s interesting to note how high the percentage of reported change was,” said Melissa Fryrear, director of Focus on the Family’s gender issues department. “These results are comparable with the success rates for dealing with other difficult issues, like depression, and more favorable than those reported by U.S. Department of Labor tax-funded programs in overcoming substance abuse.”

The American Psychology Association was not too pleased with the findings:

Despite dissenting voices by counselors and ex-gays, the American Psychological Association (APA) categorically states that homosexual attraction cannot be changed and that attempts to change such attraction are harmful. This first longitudinal study of its kind by Drs. Jones and Yarhouse refutes the APA’s position. Even Nicolas Cummings, Ph.D, Sc.D., former President of the APA, whose motion caused the APA in the mid-1970s to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder, stated that this “study has broken new ground in its adherence to objectivity and scientific precision” and calls the book “must reading.”

[Liberty Counsel’s] Mat Staver said: “This groundbreaking study showing that homosexual attraction can be changed and that change is not harmful will have profound reverberations for counselors. The debate about homosexuality has too often been driven by political rather than scientific considerations. The American Psychological Association and other similar associations may no longer silence dissent. The APA’s political postulate that homosexual attractions cannot be changed has been shattered by new research.”

Homosexual proponents have never had a moral leg to stand on. And now they are losing steam on the political side, in which they have invested 99% of their resources.

Morality is not defined by a specific subset of a culture or a population – i.e. the extremist wing of the religious community does not get to decide the moral standards of society as a whole. Can a homosexual make a decision to “not” be gay? Sure – they can decide to ignore who they are and conform to a society that persecutes them because they are not part of the “norm.” (I do recall a bit of persecution in Biblical times, and in a certain World War, but I’m sure your views wouldn’t lead to anything like that, right?). I’m sure you “pretend” to be many things you’re not on a daily basis. Can it be done? Yes. Should it have to be? Ask Hitler – or if you’d like to hear a viewpoint of the other side – ask Jesus.

Thanks for commenting. I’m always open to debate and I appreciate your civility.

It seems your entire argument is based on one part:

Morality is not defined by a specific subset of a culture or a population.

I would agree with that. But we aren’t discussing if ear rings, R-rated movies, and rock music is sinful. We are simply pointing out the biblical view of homosexuality is that it is clearly sinful. Matthew 19:4-5: “4”Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?”

It’s easy to see that anything outside the bounds of what Jesus said here is sin. Much love, brother.

No, it doesn’t. God, through Jesus, does.

== Can a homosexual make a decision to “not” be gay? Sure – they can decide to ignore who they are…==

You mean to say, “who they SAY they are.”

==… and conform to a society that persecutes them because they are not part of the “norm.”==

Nobody persecutes them, rather delivers the Truth to them.

“Gay Christian” is an oxymoron.

And, if anybody notices, everybody is either male, or female. Nobody is a member of a third sex.

APA continues to be a useful idiot, the willing victim of pressure by those who claim to be homosexual, their activists and supporters.

It’s useful to remember here that you can’t get psychologists to agree, as we see in court cases all the time. Of course, when they get together to push an agenda, they can agree, but their empiricism goes out da window.

Given that they choose the homosexual, alternative-lifestyle orientation option, they can unchoose it when they come to their senses.

==Homosexual proponents have never had a moral leg to stand on.==

It depends on whose and which morals.

They have made up a standard in order to justify what they wanna do. Then, they argue that that standard is God’s Standard when, in fact, their standard is nowhere to be found in God’s Standard. The two are completely outta alignment, and, after all, can two walk together unless they are agreed [Amos]?

God does, and you either recognize it, or you don’t.

“Who they ‘are'” indicates that you think that God made them homosexual. Care to show us where, in the Word of God, God mentions this? I know that He mentions what we now call “heterosexuality,” and He spends quite a lotta time, effort and space on it. However, not one word about the creation of “homosexual.” No instructions to a homosexual. Nada. No homosexuality, except in condemnation.

There IS considerable and consistent reference by Him of a man, as husband, and a woman, as his wife, as the only, Godly, matrimonial unit, though.

I got this quote from Opine Editorials over on Kingfisher Column:

“Marriage is neither a conservative nor a liberal issue; it is a universal human institution, guaranteeing children fathers, and pointing men and women toward a special kind of socially as well as personally fruitful sexual relationship. Gay marriage is the final step down a long road America has already traveled toward deinstitutionalizing, denuding and privatizing marriage. It would set in legal stone some of the most destructive ideas of the sexual revolution: There are no differences between men and women that matter, marriage has nothing to do with procreation, children do not really need mothers and fathers, the diverse family forms adults choose are all equally good for children. What happens in my heart is that I know the difference. Don’t confuse my people, who have been the victims of deliberate family destruction, by giving them another definition of marriage.”

Walter Fauntroy-Former DC Delegate to CongressFounding member of the Congressional Black CaucusCoordinator for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march on DC

I thought it was very applicable.
