Captain Ed says it well:
It’s Wednesday, So We Must Have A New Position
First she sounded sympathetic to the idea during a televised debate, and within moments had refused to endorse it. Afterwards, she changed her mind and endorsed it. Now today, after Governor Eliot Spitzer shelved a plan to issue New York drivers licenses to illegal aliens, Hillary Clinton shifted her position yet again to oppose the idea entirely.
People laughed at John Kerry for saying, “I was for the $87 billion before I was against it.” He looks like the Rock of Gibraltar next to Hillary Clinton. She has now taken four different positions in two weeks on a single topic.
Hillary’s “Flip-Flopitis” has even infected her most sacred issue: abortion. Look at the 12-month period from January 2004 to January 2005. We’ll start with a keynote speech Hillary made at a NARAL event celebrating the 31st anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
They [pro-lifers] have realized it cannot be done quickly and in the light of day. As we gather today, forces are aligned to change this country and strip away the rights we enjoy and have come to expect. Slowly, methodically, quietly, they have begun chipping away at the reproductive rights of women. And if those rights fall, other rights will follow. Their goal is to supplant modern society with a society that fits into their narrow world view.
Hmm, but that narrow society is what the Constitution allows for.
Next, several days after Bush’s reelection in November 2004, in a speech at Tufts University, Hillary criticized her own party for conceding evangelical votes to Bush.
She angrily complained that it was a sign of “such disrespect” to think that liberal Democrats who believe in God cannot be attractive to these religious voters.
Then, out of nowhere, a different Hillary manifested herself. January 24, 2005, Hillary’s speech to the NYS Family Planning Providers, where Hillary, shockingly seems to show a little respect for pro-lifers:
[We] should be able to find common ground on with people on the other side of this debate. I believe we can all recognize that abortion in many ways represents a sad, even tragic choice to many, many women.
Hillary is finally getting a finger around the concept that you cannot stiff pro-lifers. She has learned that she must respect them and tell them she needs their vote. What she hasn’t grasped is how to back up her talk with her voting record. She remains as stubborn as ever on pro-life legislation.
