Breaking: Romney Out of Race

Gov. Romney shocked the crowd at CPAC a few moments ago when he announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

During his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, Romney said if he prolonged his run, it would hurt the party and front-runner John McCain’s ability to defeat the Democratic nominee.

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator (Hillary) Clinton or (Barack) Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,” he said.

I’m stunned. I thought he would have waited a few more months.

Michelle Malkin thinks he will endorse McCain. Not if he is the conservative everyone is saying he is. If he is that conservative, he’ll have two choices: 1) Endorse a liberal (McCain) to prevent a Democrat victory, or 2) Endorse a conservative (Huckabee) as the only conservative remaining. There is a reason Thompson hasn’t endorsed anyone yet: he can’t endorse a liberal and he can’t endorse a long-shot candidate either. Romney is in the same boat.
