Video – Joe Lieberman to Democrats: “Eloquence is no Substitute for a Record”

2 09 2008

Joe Lieberman, an independent, was stellar tonight in his speech at the Republican National Convention. He made history too, as the first VP candidate to address the opposition’s convention. Here’s the money quote:

Sen. Obama is a gifted and eloquent young man who can do great things for our country in the years ahead. But eloquence is no substitute for a record — not in these tough times.

In the Senate he has not reached across party lines to get anything significant done, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party.

Contrast that to John McCain’s record, or the record of the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton, who stood up to some of those same Democratic interest groups and worked with Republicans to get important things done like welfare reform, free-trade agreements, and a balanced budget.

Great ending. Couldn’t have asked for a more clutch quote:

So tonight, I ask you whether you are an independent, a Reagan Democrat or a Clinton Democrat, or just a Democrat: This year, when you vote for president, vote for the person you believe is best for the country, not for the party you happen to belong to.

Nutroots are panicking and confounded.

Kos:

Paraphrasing Joe Lieberman:

“I am so bipartisan. Therefore, I stand here before you, to talk trash about Democrats.”

Talk Left:

Is anybody watching this charade? He even has the nerve to call himself a Democrat.

He says Obama isn’t right for the job because he has no record. And Sarah Palin, who would step into the Presdency should anything happen to John McCain? Please.

While I dislike the change meme and the unity meme on both sides, it’s ridiculous that the Republicans are just mimicking Obama.

Whose mimicking Obama? Didn’t you just say the speaker is a Democrat? And of course, there’s the gratuitous Palin has no record comment.

More moronic paraphrasing:

“Hello, I’m Joe Lieberman, proud Democrat, here to tell you to lock us all up for the duration of the never ending war on terror. Except me. Because John McCain said I wouldn’t have to go. Even though I’m a Dhimmicrat.”

It’s fun watching liberals squirm when facts outweigh emotion.
